How can we preserve our family's stories ?

Creating together the gift of a lifetime

Family history writing

My work as a Celebrant has made me realise how important it is to record people's stories while they are able to have the pleasure of preserving their precious memories.

This is an affirming and enjoyable task for those who can remember details of the life and times of their parents or grandparents, or those who have their own story to tell.

We meet at the story-teller's home or mine and over a relaxed chat I record on a Dictaphone what the teller feels comfortable to relate.

I then write this on my computer at home, and the next time we meet I bring the first part for editing, and we move on to the next part.

This process continues until the story teller is satisfied with what has been written. Some people choose to concentrate on one topic or person, others like to record all they can about their ancestors.

Photos and documents can be scanned into the text to illustrate it and add interest. We discuss styles of presentation, types of binding, the size of the pages and such details so that the author maintains control of the end result.

Costs depend upon the number of coloured photos and illustrations, the size of the book and the complexity of writing. I charge a moderate hourly rate and will be happy to show you copies of other work I have done and give you an idea of costs.

Let us write a magnificent life record

Family History Writing Classes

From time to time I take classes to assist people to begin writing their own story, or that of a family member. Over the course of 5 sessions the participants are taught the skills to begin the story, learn interviewing techniques, learn about layout, do writing exercises, have brain-storming sessions, discuss the placement of photos and printing options, and generally receive a lot of encouragement and ideas.

Feedback: … I am enjoying your classes. It is both fun and healing delving into the memories of childhood. Thank you for your input and guidance…' Elizabeth
